USS Pompano was mistakenly bombed by aircraft from USS Enterprise but managed to escape.

USS Tang pictured above, was an ace US submarine… until she literally sank herself with a circular running torpedo.

What was the weakest period in US history in terms of military strength? Was it during World War II or the Vietnam War?

Oh yeah. These kinds of incidents are quite common even in modern war, let alone back then.
